If Blitzkrieg, Paul Martin’s thesis that humans killed off the mammoth, is only a theory, it is a fact that humans worldwide are accelerating the extinction of elephants that live today. Like the Clovis, in the last 200 years humans have tipped the balance. Human forces have accelerated extinctions of many animals through deforestation, habitat loss from agriculture and housing developments, and the creation of industries that have contributed to global warming. Current statistics show that 96 elephants are killed every day at the hands of ivory poachers alone. One of the simplest ways to ensure immediate stabilization of elephant communities is to ban ivory trade and make all ivory poaching illegal, but governments worldwide are reluctant to execute meaningful legislation and countries in Africa struggle to prevent poaching. Without our intervention, Blitzkrieg, the extinction of elephants at the hands of humans, will happen without question.
